Silesian Metropolis

Silesian Metropolis – the first metropolis in Poland is composed of 41 towns and municipalities which together cover 2.5 thousand sq. km. As many as 2.3 million people live here and approximately 240 thousand companies and enterprises generating around 8% of Polish GDP are based in this region.
The inhabitants of Upper Silesia and Dąbrowa Basin have long felt that they function in a single, coherent urban organism, and the borders between the cities and towns are purely arbitrary. For many years, the emergence of a metropolis in the centre of the Silesian Voivodeship has been something natural. The Metropolis is located on the main national and international routes, both road and rail. In the northern part of the Metropolis, there is an international airport Katowice-Pyrzowice. Being a commercial and service centre with a significant share of production activity, the Metropolis is a large economic hub in Poland. It is also a region where specialist medical services as well as academic, cultural and sports functions concentrate.
